Quality Risks of the Platform Economy for Science Communication

Wisssenschaftspolitik im Dialog – a series of publications of the Belin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, Volume 18

by Frank Lobigs

This issue on the "Quality Risks of the Platform Economy for Science Communication" first raises the question of how media use is changing in the course of digitization and platformization. A system comparison based on three concepts of media or political economy is then used to work out that and how risks have been maximized in this context. Finally, on the basis of the analyses, suggestions are made for an improved design of science communication, its research and, among other things, for the "establishment and promotion of a cooperative media platform for quality journalistic content".

Science Communication in the Digital World: Curating the Research Landscape in Two Thematic Fields

Wisssenschaftspolitik im Dialog – a series of publications of the Belin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, Volume 17

by Jan-Hendrik Passoth, Maryam Tatari, Niels G. Mede

The studies published in this volume demonstrate the great heterogeneity of research on digital science communication. With his study "Characteristics of Research on Effects of Digital Science Communication", Niels G. Mede provides the first systematic overview of the growing primarily German, Swiss, and Austrian research on effects in this topic area.

The Digital Transformation of Science Communication

Wisssenschaftspolitik im Dialog – a series of publications of the Belin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, Volume 16

by Christoph NeubergerPeter WeingartBirte FähnrichBenedikt FecherMike S. SchäferHannah Schmid-PetriGert G. Wagner

The digitization of science communication is associated with a multitude of new forms of communication and participation opportunities that are fundamentally changing the relationship between science and society. In this volume, a theoretical framework is developed that helps to classify these changes on the basis of concrete examples such as open science, plagiarism wikis, or knowledge communities, to systematize research findings, and to point out open questions. The authors were members of the Interdisciplinary Working Group "Implications of Digitization for the Quality of Science Communication" (2018-2021).

Science Communication and Social Media between Legal Protection and the Need for Regulation

Wisssenschaftspolitik im Dialog – a series of publications of the Belin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, Volume 15

by Wolfgang SchulzKeno C. PotthastNatali Helberger

Changes in the media have significantly altered public science communication. One consequence is that many more actors are involved in communicating about scientific issues. As a result, misinformation and conspiracy theories can also be spread more easily via the Internet. However, it is not always easy for users to distinguish these from serious science communication. The two articles in this volume discuss questions of legal protection and the need for regulation with regard to social media from a constitutional perspective: Wolfgang Schulz and Keno C. Potthast focus more on the national and Natali Helberger on the international perspective.
